Solar panel costs in Edinburgh: what to expect in 2026
What solar panels cost in Edinburgh, what drives the price, and how batteries, scaffolding and roof type affect your final quotation.
If you live in Edinburgh and are thinking about solar panels, the cost question comes second. The first question is always whether your roof is allowed to have them — conservation areas, listed buildings and the World Heritage Site all change the answer. Once that is settled, the price depends on the size of the system, whether you add a battery, and how easy your roof is to access.
What drives the cost of a solar system in Edinburgh?
The main cost factors are the number of panels, the inverter, the battery (if you choose one), scaffolding, and any electrical upgrades your consumer unit needs. A larger roof can fit more panels and generate more electricity, but the price does not scale linearly — the first panels are the most expensive because of fixed costs like scaffolding and labour. A typical domestic system is between five and twelve thousand pounds, depending on size and battery storage. Every quotation we provide is itemised in writing after a survey, not estimated from a satellite image.
Does roof orientation change the cost?
South-facing roofs generate the most electricity, but east-west splits can work well too, especially with a battery that stores daytime surplus for the evening. The orientation does not change the equipment cost, but it does change how much of your own generation you can use versus export to the grid. We model this for your specific roof during the survey so the quotation reflects real expected performance, not a generic average.
What about scaffolding and access?
Most Edinburgh homes need scaffolding for a safe installation, and this is a line item in your written quotation. Tenements and harder-to-reach roofs may need more scaffolding or specialist access equipment. If your roof needs repairs — slipped slates, leadwork, or structural reinforcement — we flag this before the installation begins so you can decide whether to include it.
Should I include a battery in the initial cost?
Adding a battery at the same time as the panels is usually cheaper than retrofitting later, because the inverter and wiring can be specified for both. A battery lets you use solar energy in the evening and buy cheap off-peak electricity from the grid. For many Edinburgh homes the combination of panels and battery pays back faster than panels alone, but the right answer depends on your usage pattern and whether you are on a time-of-use tariff. The survey covers this in detail.
Are there ongoing costs after installation?
Solar panels need very little maintenance — no moving parts, no fuel. The inverter may need replacing after 10 to 15 years, which is a cost to budget for. Batteries degrade gradually and may need replacement after 10 years. We do not charge a monitoring fee; the monitoring app is included with the installation. If you want an annual inspection, that is an optional extra we can quote separately.
Can I spread the cost?
Loans are available, subject to status, through FCA-authorised finance partners. We are not a lender and do not quote interest rates. The quotation covers the equipment and installation only. If you choose to finance, the finance agreement is between you and the lender, separate from our installation contract.
What is not included in the quotation?
Our quotation covers panels, inverter, battery, mounting system, scaffolding, electrical connections, installation labour and MCS registration. It does not cover roof repairs beyond minor slate replacement, planning application fees if consent is needed, or removal of asbestos if discovered. We flag these before you commit, not after.

Do solar panels save money on electricity bills in Edinburgh?
Yes, solar panels reduce the electricity you buy from the grid. The amount you save depends on your usage, roof orientation and whether you add a battery. We do not quote savings figures without a survey.
Is a battery worth the extra cost?
A battery lets you use solar energy in the evening and buy cheaper off-peak electricity. For many Edinburgh homes the combination pays back faster than panels alone, but the right answer depends on your usage pattern.
Are there hidden costs with solar installation?
Scaffolding, roof repairs, electrical upgrades and bird mesh can add to the base price. We list every cost line by line in your written quotation so there are no surprises after the survey.
